"Roadster Man" (roadsterman)

OK so in preparation of my cross-country journey, I’ve added new brakes all around. When I take the wheels off I have someone hold down the brake to lock the frontn wheen in place and make it easier. But whenever I get to the front passenger wheel still slides around- the brake isn’t holding it in place like the other front wheel. The car also darts to the left under hard braking, clearly pointing to the driver’s side pad biting and the passenger’s side not biting.
This leads me to say “screw it” and replace the caliper altogether, I’m not about to fix it unless it’s not going to be a possible headache..
While I’m at it, should I replace the other front caliper as well? Might as well do both at the same time.
I have steel braided lines that are 48K miles old, but they seem just fine so I’m not going to replace them.
The rear brakes don’t seem to be an issue, so I’m just going to replace the pads there. Hawk HPS all four corners.
Now, onto the bit question: rotors. I see some grooves in mine although the wear is still in spec. But they rust reasily and some of the grooves are pretty deep (had to brake using the backing pads when I ran out of pad material...). I’m thinking of replacing all 4. Is it worth it to spring for a set of Brembo disks? Or should I stick with OEM or autozone brand. Thanks for your help guys, I already know what most of the forum guys would say, I’d just like 2 cents from the nice people at Oppo.

1.) Replace brake stuff by “axle”, not by corner/wheel.
2.) Chances are you will end up replacing the rotors as there are very few places left that will cut them for you.
3.) Brembo blanks are probably worth it IMO.

For such a light car I doubt Brembos would be that big of an improvement. Unless they can be had for fairly cheap.

even the el-cheapo made-in-china Brembo-branded rotors are pretty good, EBC rotors are also well made and feature a nifty anti-rust coating, and are reasonably priced.

If you have a 1.6 go ahead and get 1.8 front brakes. It's a simple OEM BBK.

Experiences certainly vary but some of the cheap parts house rotors are bad out of the box. Not worth the hassle if it’s not too much more expensive.

you are technically supposed to replace your rotors with your brakes, I was able to find some stoptechs or some such for a decent price. I would not buy drilled brakes though, go slotted if it matters to you. there are other mid range rotors you can get without spending as much as brembos.

My super-expert mechanic tested lots of rotor brands for durability, and recommended ATE PremiumOne Rotors ( http://www.ate-na.com/www/ate_us_en/… I have had them on my ‘99 NB1 for about a year now and they work very well for me, and they kinda look cool. . .

This. You could also try sourcing NB2 “sport” brakes but it might not fit your current wheel setup.

Yeah it’s a 1.8 so I’m not concerned about upgrading the calipers.

Gotcha, I figured fronts first then rears. I’ll probably spring for the Brembos.

Rotors and calipers are both cheap and easy to replace on a Miata. Just do all four rotors and definitely replace both front calipers. If you are adventurous, you could do the rear ones as well but those are less important. Rockauto is a good place to get those parts from on the cheap, no need to go for high performance rotors/calipers. Dont forget a BFH for the rotors and make sure you bleed the calipers real good.
